Shirt and tie to wear to a wedding (and to match a suit I already have)

I'm off to a wedding over the Bank Holiday weekend - it's going to be at Kew Gardens and (if the weather is nice) a lot of it will be outside.

I'll be wearing a suit I already have (Reiss I'm afraid - slate, single button - see : www.reiss.co.uk/shop/mens/suits/collins/slate) but would love some thoughts on what shirt / tie I could match this with (either with black or brown shoes).

Thanks in advance! :-)

Hi, you might find it helpful to consult our Wedding Wisdom section, especially the dress code guide for guests.

To go with this suit I’d select a traditional white shirt, our Duke of York in luxury twill would be perfect – the twill would look superb with your slate coloured suit and the length and shape of the collar is correct for the suit too.

For a tie, have a look at our Plain Grey Satin tie. If you fancy stripes, look at the Grey/White Edged Satin tie and Pink/Grey Sation Stripe tie . This is a great look for a wedding, sharp and classic…but next time get the suit from Lewins!

Hope that helps,

John.

Hi John,

Thanks for this - I'll be popping into the Jermyn Street store this weekend to take a look at those ties and pick one up.

And I'll make sure to check out your suits next time too!

how can a man who is responsible for designing this shirt..

suggest something as dull as a white shirt and a plain tie for a wedding!!....get some colour under your suit!!!!...weddings should be an occasion for going slightly "crazy" with your shirt and tie..unless you're the groom!

and finally...any chance Mr Francomb of doing that particualr fabric in a POW colar regular fit for us "round bellies"!!!...I'd buy thaht one in a millisecond!!!

Of course, I love to wear my range of shirts sometimes to the office and usually at weekends, but I suppose I’m a traditionalist at heart and I do look forward to weddings that give my morning coat an airing from time to time when required. And when they don’t, I still dress in a traditional way to respect of the formality of the occasion. But if you know the bride and groom well, and you’re sure you’ve judged the mood of the wedding, then you could potentially go for a brighter shirt – but be careful!!

As for cutting the JF fabrics in POW REG fits - have you tried the John Francomb 'Milan' shirt?  - it's not as fitted as you might think!

i have a wedding next week in which have bought stripe grey suit and plain white shirt. what kind of a tie and the colour can i use pls with the pocket handkerchief

Hi Tim,

In order to compliment your grey suit and white shirt, which is a great choice for a wedding, a plain tie is the best option. The colour of the tie should match the colour of the pocket handkerchief, however if the handkerchief is white then there are a variety of wedding ties available to add colour to the suit.
