Like many sartorial rules and conventions, the answer will depend on who you’re talking to. 

We’ve recently made a series of videos entitled ‘How to Fold a Pocket Handkerchief’, we’ve released one episode so far where we look at the classic pocket square. In this video we did choose to match the white cotton hank with a white shirt, and generally you can’t go wrong if you match your pocket handkerchief to either your shirt OR your tie.
