I'm off to a wedding over the Bank Holiday weekend - it's going to be at Kew Gardens and (if the weather is nice) a lot of it will be outside....

Greetings,
I reside in the USA and I am getting married in June next year. We're going to have an evening wedding but I don't fancy renting a tux like most people do here. I plan to buy something like your dinner jacket or one I saw at M&S website and wear it with a white dinner/tuxedo shirt and a white tie. My questions are: 1) Do I have to wear a cumberbund since I don't want to use a vest? 2) If yes. What colour cumberbund should I wear with a white tie? 3) Is it ok for my bestman and groomsmen to wear a black european cut suit instead of a tux? Your suggestions will be of great help. Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Congratulations on the upcoming wedding!
Whilst I wouldn’t usually suggest wearing a dinner jacket at a wedding, I do understand that this isn’t uncommon in the US, and it’s your wedding so you need to be comfortable with your outfit!
A cummerbund is conventionally worn with black tie and a waistcoat with white tie. Another reason to wear a cummerbund is if the front bib section of the shirt doesn’t go below the waistline. Cummerbund colour should really be decided in accordance with the colour scheme of your wedding as a whole, much like you’d decided tie colour, there’s definitely an opportunity to introduce tasteful colour.
With regards to your groomsmen’s suit, I think it’d look better if they were also in a dinner jacket – perhaps you could wear a different coloured cummerbund or waistcoat to differentiate yourself from them.
Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I gave up on waistcoats because I couldn't find a good quality here in the US and I don't know where I can get it in England. My color is sky. Are you saying it's ok to wear a sky cumberband(if I can find one) and a white tie. Is there any difference between a dinner jacket and a tuxedo? As a style expert, what better alternatives to a dinner jacket will you suggest for me?
Hi,
A dinner suit and a tuxedo are the same thing, the term 'dinner suit' is largely used in the Commonwealth, and 'tuxedo' is used in the US. I suggest you consult our Wedding Wisdom section, it has lots of great tips for your big day!
