Brown or black shoes

Hi,

I have the Westminster Grey Herringbone suit and wasn't sure which colour shoes suit it best. What are the rules for shoes and suits. Also, where can I get some cheap(ish) Burgandy shoes from?

Hi,

First of all, thanks for buying the Westminster, it’s a great choice. Considering the colour and tone of this suit I would opt for a pair of black shoes, and as the suit is fairly classic in style – I would look to reflect this in my choice of shoe. So I’d look at an Oxford shoe, maybe even a Wing Tip Oxford Brogue, something very British and traditional.

For a classic and reasonably priced pair of burgundy shoes, I’d recommend the Dixon by Clarks.

Thanks for your reply!

Would burgundy shoes go with this then? I also have a lighter grey suit (a shade darker then the Wentworth light grey). Which colour would you recommend for this?

Finally, I have some tan shoes that I sometimes where on a night out with some smart jeans. Do they ever work with suits?

Hi,

I'd have to agree with the below comment. It really does depend on where you're working...you ought to judge the level of formality in your place of work, then make a decision. But yes, in theory, you could wear the burgundy shoes with this suit.

Likewise for your light grey suit, you'll have the best idea of how formal your office dress code is - you definitely can't go wrong with black.

Re: the tan shoes. I think they can work really well with suits - especially navy - the combination of colours is fantastic!

Would depend on where you work really. Looks like you should go black in the City, or greater London Area; but if you work here in Stockholm or for example Brussels just pick a nice looking brown shoe. The right shade of brown is 9 times out of 10 a better look, but its not the thing to use in London.

Westminster seems to be the only remaining suit with traditional English cut on the trousers. I'd love to find more high cut trousers with adjusters, and perhaps even complementary braces sold here at TM Lewin. Perhaps in the future?

Hi,

As well as the Westminster Suit there is also the Tamworth suit which comes with "Daks Tops" (Buckle Fastners).  The Leicester suit (Blue Pin Stripe) once came with Daks Tops   and if memory serves me correct I also think the Ludlow suit which was available until recently also sported Daks Tops.  But currently in store I am only aware of The Westminster and Tamworth.

As for shoes, I would go with Black Brogues with the Westminster and think that a Bergundy pair of shoes would go best with your lighter grey suit similar to the Wentworth.  The contrast against the lighter grey suit and the bergundy shoes looks great and maes the ensemble look less work-orientated (if this is the look you after).  May I add that Russell & Bromley have some very nice high Bergundy Loafers priced beyond my means at around £175 last time I checked.

However, despite the old maxim "Never Wear Brown in town" I often get lots of favourable attention when I wear my Brown Tweed shoed by Paolo Vandini "Pat Laced Tweed and Leather": £63.82 when I last checked.  If you are going to break the rules then you may as well do so wearing both tweed and brown at the same time!

Hope this helps.

The Tammworth suit coming in May at the same time as the extra waistcoats perhaps? I do love the 'daks tops'.

The Tamworth suit is already available in stores - well certainly; Jermyn Street and Regent Street 1 and 2.

It kind of already comes with a waistcoat.  Essentially the Tamworth is DB Wentworth suit.  The Wentworth suit recently added the waistcost to it arrangment.  So in theory you can have a Tamworth DB suit and put it with a Wentworth waistcoat.  So you can have the entire piece albeit the waistcoat goes by a different name.

Good luck.

Alas, as I live in Stockholm, Sweden I'm restricted to ordering from the website, or by e-mail.

Do you have a product ID number for the Tamworth trousers and the vest (and prices). I assume that the Tamworth trousers would work with the Wentworth jacket and vest, given that it is the same light gray sharkskin. It makes more sense to me then a vest with a DB jacket. Might get both jackets though who knows :-9 but not before I actually seen the DB jacket.

A yes, a good name for that combo would be The Peel suit, don't you think? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Peel

I will endeavour to get you the ID number for both items and the prices.   The Tamworth trousers go really well with the Wentworth suit...in fact it is slightly better (in my opinion) for two reasons:

1) They have Dak Tops (English Cut)

2) They are cutt on a slimmer block which is great for the well dressed clientle.

You must recommend the "Peel Suit" :-)
